The Brief

From lockdown hobby to Govanhill flagship.

Kofi Kade started as a lockdown project in 2020. Sri Lankan family recipes were turned into bottled sauces. By 2021 it was a market stall. By 2024, a physical shop in Govanhill. But the digital presence hadn't kept pace. They needed more than a menu page. They needed an online ordering system, a way to sell sauces, catering enquiries, and something to keep customers coming back.

The brief: build a digital experience that matches the quality of the food. Not a template. Not a Wix site. Something that feels like the brand. Bold, authentic, Sri Lankan-inspired. And one that actually drives repeat business.

The Challenge

A brand platform, not just a website.

Kofi Kade doesn't just sell food. It sells an experience. The website needed to do more than list products. It needed an interactive sandwich builder that makes ordering fun, a loyalty programme that rewards regulars, a shop that the owner can update without calling a developer, and catering pages that convert event planners.

All of this on a small business budget, with zero monthly platform fees, and the ability for staff to manage loyalty stamps from a tablet behind the counter.

What We Built

10 pages, serverless backend, zero monthly fees.

Interactive Sandwich Builder

5-step wizard: bread, protein, toppings, sauce, review. 37 hand-drawn food illustrations composited in real-time. Sticky preview on desktop and mobile. Feeds directly into the ordering system.

Kofi Kard Loyalty Programme

One-time-password login (email or phone), stamp card with tiered rewards: Bronze (free sauce), Silver (10% off), Gold (free sandwich). Referral codes and automated birthday rewards.

Staff Dashboard

PIN-protected interface for staff behind the counter. Add stamps, redeem rewards, look up customers. Runs on a tablet at the till.

CMS-Powered Shop

Product catalogue managed via a headless CMS: name, description, price, ingredients, allergens, images. The owner updates products without touching code. Automatic fallback if the CMS is unavailable.

Online Ordering

Collection and delivery ordering plus third-party delivery integration. Ordering access points embedded across the site: navbar, footer, catering pages, and the sandwich builder.

Brand Experience

Custom typography, Sri Lankan-inspired colour palette (charcoal, green, saffron), interactive scroll timeline of the brand story (2020-2024), and 45+ optimised lifestyle images.

Catering Platform

Dedicated catering pages with sandwich platter configurations (4, 6, 8 person), sauce station options, and an enquiry form. Carousel galleries of platter photos for events.

Referral System

Each loyalty member gets a unique referral code. When a new customer signs up with it, both the referrer and the new customer earn bonus stamps. Full referral history tracking.

Legal & GDPR Compliance

Auto-updating legal documents synced with UK GDPR, PECR, and ICO guidance. Cookie consent banner with granular options.

Engineering Decisions

Why we built it this way.

Static site with a serverless backend, not a full-stack app

A food brand site doesn't need server-side rendering on every request. The entire site builds to plain HTML/CSS/JS and deploys for free. The only dynamic part is the loyalty system, which runs as a serverless function with a lightweight database. Total infrastructure cost: effectively zero.

Hand-drawn illustrations, not stock icons

The sandwich builder uses 37 custom SVG illustrations. Each bread, protein, topping, and sauce drawn to match Kofi Kade's brand aesthetic. No stock icons, no generic food clipart. Selected ingredients are composited visually in real-time, giving customers a preview of their custom sandwich as they build it.

Lightweight database for loyalty, not enterprise infrastructure

The loyalty system needs relational data (customers, stamps, rewards, referrals, sessions) but doesn't need heavy database infrastructure. We chose a lightweight edge database with zero cold starts, automatic replication, and no monthly bill. The serverless function handles authentication, session management, and stamp calculations.

CMS so the owner can update products themselves

The shop page pulls products from a headless CMS at build time and via client-side fetch at runtime. The owner can add new sauces, change prices, update descriptions, and manage images without opening a code editor. If the CMS is unavailable, the site falls back to hardcoded products so the shop never goes blank.

The Result

A brand platform that drives repeat business.

Kofi Kade's digital platform is live at kofikade.com. The interactive sandwich builder makes ordering fun and shareable. The Kofi Kard loyalty programme turns first-time visitors into regulars. Staff manage stamps from a tablet behind the counter. And the whole thing runs with zero monthly platform fees eating into a small business's margins.
